George West is located midway between Choke Canyon Reservoir and Lake Corpus Christi where hunting and fishing abound.

The City of George West, the County seat of Live Oak County is a tribute to the generosity and farsightedness of its founder, George Washington West. In 1915 he set out to build a town on the site of his ranch. After building a courthouse, school, and a hotel, among other things, he sold to farmers, ranchers, and businessmen, thousands of acres of this rich land. Many of these original settler's families still live here today.

Begin your visit to George West with a stop at the historic Buck West House which is home to our Chamber of Commerce office and information center. From here venture out and visit the Grace Armantrout Museum housing memorabilia from the area's past. Next stop, the Live Oak County Courthouse, home of Geronimo. Once a lead steer for Mr. George West, this longhorn is preserved In all his splendor and is displayed in a glass-fronted building on the courthouse lawn. Just a short drive out of town, you can visit Choke Canyon Reservoir for excellent viewing of native wildlife or a day of fishing. For some of the state's best white bass fishing, visit the Nueces River during January and February. We have two public boat ramps and a county park just minutes from town.

Two major annual events are the Live Oak County Fair and Storyfest. The fair is held on the 3rd weekend each March and is a week full of activities beginning with a beauty pageant and culminating in a busy weekend with a rodeo, parade, livestock show, carnival and cabrito cookoff. George West has been proclaimed "The Storytelling Capital of Texas" and is proud to host Storyfest, a festival dedicated to the art of storytelling. Held on the 1st Saturday in November, this family-oriented event draws thousands to enjoy various forms of storytelling, musical entertainment, arts and crafts, and food.

When you visit our city, you will certainly notice the handiwork of the Unify to Beautify ladies. This beautification committee of our Chamber of Commerce has been hard at work since its organization in 1989. They have received statewide recognition twice by winning the Governor's Community Achievement Award and George West is pleased to be a Keep Texas Beautiful Proud Community.

Located just five miles off Interstate 37 and with State highways 59 and 281 running directly through town, there are many roads that may bring you to our city. It is our hope that when traveling through, you will take the time to stop, visit, and let us show you what a rancher many years ago thought was the perfect spot in the Coastal Bend.
